The shortages in the Cuban health service also impact the education sector. These are especially acute in educational care and residential settings, where everything from basic first aid kits, PPE, and paediatric medical supplies are scarce. In June the British National Education Union (NEU) responded to a special request from its sister union in Cuba(SNTECD) for medical aid for children in some of the country's 201 educational residential establishments: 147 residential schools (12.45% of the total number of secondary schools) serving 44,500 children in rural areas, and all of the country’s 54 children’s homes, which provide support for 419 children. Cuba’s homes for children and adolescents without family protection are managed by the Cuban Ministry of Education and provide children with life conditions similar to a family home. During their stay in these institutions, they have guaranteed medical care, accommodation, meals, school uniform and clothing as well as a stipend for personal expenses. Thanks to the NEU’s International Committee, £10,000 in emergency funds has been donated to the Cuba Vive appeal, which will pay for 95 School First Aid kits, 30 nebulisers, 50 stethoscopes, 50 paediatric sphygmomanometers, 10 paediatric 18g intraosseous access devices, 50 clinical thermometers, 80 paediatric self-inflating bags and masks (manual resuscitator), and 4,000 syringes and needles of varying sizes as requested for residential education centres.
